Students Talents to hit airwaves

Budding radio presenters from primary schools are gearing themselves up to take to the airwaves later this month.

The 10 and 11 year-olds are taking part in Radio Zone, the latest initiative to be launched by East Hull Education Action Zone.

Pupils from eight primary schools have been selected to take part in the project, which uses written and spoken work to improve literacy skills.

Radio Zone takes place over five weeks.

Youngsters have already investigated what makes a good radio programme and have interviewed a local radio presenter.

In the final week, the pupils will get a chance to see a real radio station in action when they visit Hull's hospital radio station, Kingstown Radio.

They will meet the DJ and watch him while he broadcasts.

The visit will culminate in them recording a one-minute piece to be broadcast in the run-up to christmas.

Learning Assistant Louise Pitts, who has organised the project, said: "It's a great opportunity for these kids to try something new."

"They probably listen to radio all the time but don't realise just what goes on behind the scenes."

All the pupils get a recording of their starring moment as a keepsake from the project.
